Salvador Mungia and Janelle Chase Fazio join ACLU-WA in class-action suit against Pierce County

Gordon Thomas Honeywell LLP, December 2017

GTH partner Salvador A. Mungia and associate Janelle Chase-Fazio, as cooperating attorneys with the ACLU of Washington, recently filed a class-action lawsuit against Pierce County arising out of its mistreatment of jail inmates with mental health disabilities. The suit was filed on behalf of current, and future, inmates with mental illness to force Pierce County to change its policies regarding screening for mental health issues, for failing to provide necessary mental health medications, failing to provide appropriate treatment, and refusing to provide needed mental health medications when those inmates are released. This follows a 1995 lawsuit in which the ACLU-W, together with GTH, sued Pierce County over jail conditions.  That suit resulted in the new jail being constructed and changes in Pierce County’s policies and practices.

The GTH/ACLU-WA attorneys represent the inmates only for violations of their civil liberties and are not involved in their underlying criminal cases.
